An assessment of the applicability of cold air and oil mist in surface grinding

چکیده
This paper discusses the application of an eco-grinding system using a mixture of compressed cold air and vegetable oil. The feasibility of the system was assessed using the surface grinding of plain carbon steel 1045 with a BWA60MVA1 wheel. The investigation showed that cold air can be used to suppress surface burning under certain material removal rates and has an advantage of reduced grinding forces. With the addition of very small amount of vegetable oil, a larger depth of cut can be performed without burning while keeping a good grinding quality. Grinding chips were of lamellar and leafy shapes, indicating a shearing mechanism of chip formation. There was no significant difference in subsurface hardness of the components ground with coolant or with cold air and oil mist (CAOM), although the latter showed a stronger dependence of surface residual stresses on the depth of cut due to the limited cooling capacity of CAOM. © 2003 Elsevier B.V. The effect of compressed cold air and vegetable oil on the subsurface residual stress of ground tool steel
This paper investigates experimentally the effect of compressed cold air (CCA) and vegetable oil on the surface integrity and residual tresses of ground tool steel components. It shows that CCA can reduce grinding temperature and produce a compressive residual stress up o the grinding depth of 30 m. CCA can also improve surface finish while keeping grinding forces low. Oil was found to be more ...

متن کاملStudy on Experimental and Modeling of Rotary Roll Dressing of Grinding Wheels
Two of the important parameters in grinding operation are surface roughness of the workpiece and the amount of consumed energy. These parameters are strongly affected by the condition of grinding wheel surface which is dependent on the dressing parameters. Predicting the roughness of the grinding wheel surface after dressing with known dressing parameters can improve the grinding process. Resea...

Surface roughness is a significant parameter which determines the efficiency of optical components. Surface damages induced by grinding strongly influence the mechanical strength and optical quality of optical glasses. It is meaningful to rapid evaluate the surface roughness through the measurement of different grinding parameters. In this study, a cup diamond wheel (D64) is used in grinding pr...
